Cannot connect to Win10 PC with client certificate (no connection possible)

Hi, all!
I installed CA and client certificates on Win 10 Pro client PC and
configured a certificate based WLAN profile via Cisco AP (named ciscosb)
to freeradius. (login via certificate, no password).
But I dont't get it to work. PC says "no connection to this network
possible". Windows WLAN report says "Error during authentification of
EAP method type 13. Error: 0x54F. And it also says : Disconnect reason:
explicit Eap error.

I'm still not clear where to find the issue: Client PC or Cisco AP or
freeradius configuration.

Here is the log of one connection attempt. Could you please check if
from radius perspective everything looks ok?

  Where did you get these certs from?  Are you using  the testing certs from raddb/certs?  Those *do* work.

I created the certs on my side via the method described in freeradius
certs folder.

And they do work with my Android devices.
But I will follow the hint and use the testing certs.

If they [your certs] work on Android, it's likely not the certs that are the problem.
I don't have the detail in front of me, but setting up EAP-TLS on Win10 is somewhat confusing. [At least it was last time I did it.]

I'd probably do some google searches to determine how you configure Win10 properly, while configuring the Wireless connection.
If I get a chance, I'll go see if I have some documentation that describes it.

  The important thing is to use the scripts in raddb/certs.  They set up all the various certificate magic that Windows likes.

  It's likely that the certs are OK, and that you're missing some magic configuration on the Windows side.

 While I'm still struggling with my issue I read documentation again and
again, especially about
 the cert documents.
 Now I'm so confused that I like to come back to some basic questions:

 raddb/certs/README says:

 $ vi client.cnf

 Edit the "input_password" and "output_password" fields to be the
 password for the client certificate. You will have to give these
 passwords to the end user who will be using the certificates.

and later:
 $ make client.pem

 The users certificate will be in "emailAddress.pem",
 i.e. "[hidden email]".

The bootstrap script is indeed creating this email-like certificate. But
when I install it on
the client PC there is no password needed (but installation is
successfull).
But in addition the bootstrap script generates 5 more client files
(client.pem, client.key etc.).
When I install those I'm asked for the password (as expected).
So: what is the correct file to load into the PC as client cert for
EAP-TLS?

And one more question:

raddb/certs/README says:

 MAKING A SERVER CERTIFICATE

 The following steps will let you create a server certificate for use
 with TLS-based EAP methods, such as EAP-TLS, PEAP, and TTLS. Follow
 similar steps to create an "inner-server.pem" file, for use with
 EAP-TLS that is tunneled inside of another TLS-based EAP method.

The bootstrap script does not care about this inner-server.cfg config
file and does not
generate inner-server.pem. Is it correct? The Makefile does have an
entry for that
but this is not used by the bootstrap file.
Is it on intention?

  Yes, a certificate doesn't need a signature.

  The client certificate, and the client key.  The certificate has various forms (PEM, CRT, etc.).  You only need one.

  Yes.  The inner-server certificate is used for mods-available/inner-eap.  If you don't use that module, then the inner-server certificate isn't necessary.

I think I got it to work!!
To refresh the memory: Radius based WLAN access control in a school for
students and teachers. But there
are some school-owned Win 10 tablets which should be able to login
automatically via Radius client certificates.
It seems it is working now! Thanks for your great support!
Can you guys do me the favor to confirm that everything is going right
with the certs (see debug file below)?
Once you confirm, then I have a new question:
We use a Captive Portal connected to the freeradius server. This is fine
to let user accept terms and conditions etc.
But for the special user behind the client certificate ("RadiusClient")
we don't want to see this Captive Portal web site.
Is there anything freeradius can do or is it purely a CP configuration
thing?

  If there's an Access-Accept and the system gets on WiFi, it's OK.  Nothing else matters.

  You need to bypass the captive portal completely.  It has nothing to do with FreeRADIUS.

  Typically you have a "closed" SSID which requires EAP / certificates.  Then, you have an "open" SSID which is controlled by the captive portal.  You can't mix & match EAP and captive portals.  The protocols are designed to make this impossible.

I tried so many things on Win 10 side and regenerated so many certs on
freeradius side
that I finally lost the overview :-)
So I cannot say which detail made the deal.
However, this is what I did:
- install CA certificate on PC
- install client certificate on PC ( the one which looks like an
email..., remember the common-name
   because this is the username which will be used for your radius
authorization)
- now create a WLAN profile for this which confused me most because it
is a pain on Win 10!
   Properties for wireless networks: (I translate that from my German
PC, so the correct English
   wording might be slightly different):
   Security settings:
   > Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
   > Encryption type: AES
   > Method for network authentification: Microsoft: Secured EAP (PEAP)
      -> Settings:
          - check server by certificate
          - authentification method: secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
             * Setting: disable usage of own Win credentials
          - enable fast recovery of connection (the other check boxes
are not enabled)
   > Advanced settings:
      -> authentification mode: User authentification

I currently use freeradius with LDAP on OpenLDAP. Here I had to add a
user which is the
same as the common-name in my client certificate above.
At the very end it is not soooooo complicated (as everything you finally
understood). But
the learning cycle was long.

proposed.
